Participation in Fieldwork, Externships, or Academic Exchange | Students
Columbia Residential supports the University’s core educational and research mission by helping students make the most of available housing resources to enhance their academic and professional growth. For students participating in affiliated exchange programs, externships, or fieldwork, two housing options are available: subletting and housing cancelation.
Students engaged in enrichment opportunities who plan to return to Columbia for at least 30 days at the conclusion of their agreement may be eligible to sublet their unit. Subletting is subject to eligibility criteria and requires prior approval.
To qualify, students must:
- Be enrolled in a partner program that maintains full-time affiliation with Columbia University.
- Obtain approval from their designated student housing liaison.
- Return to Columbia Residential housing for a minimum of 30 days, not including short-term extensions.
- Sublets cannot exceed 365 consecutive days (one full year).

Students who need to cancel their housing due to participation in a Columbia-affiliated exchange, externship, or fieldwork opportunity outside the New York Metropolitan area may apply for a Cancellation Fee Waiver. To qualify, residents must complete their move-out by the end of the last academic term in which they are enrolled in classes. Please note that internships are not considered an enrollment period.

After completing the approved enrichment opportunity, students must submit a new housing application to be considered for future Columbia Residential housing.
Students enrolled in dual degree programs with a partner institution outside of Columbia University are eligible for Columbia Residential housing only while enrolled in classes at Columbia. If more than one academic year is spent at another institution, the student is responsible for notifying Columbia Residential of this change in eligibility and must move out of Columbia housing by the end of the last academic term in which they are enrolled in classes.
