560 Riverside Drive Barbecue Reservation

Residents of 560 Riverside Drive may reserve a barbecue grill at no charge during our barbecue season. To reserve a grill, residents must complete this form at least 3 business days in advance of the requested date. Only one grill may be reserved per apartment at a time.

Reservations are subject to availability and not guaranteed. Residents who request a barbecue grill will be contacted once their reservation can be confirmed.

BARBECUE SEASON DATES & TIMES

Memorial Day Weekend starting through Labor Day.  

AVAILABILITY

Barbecuing will be allowed in the designated area only on:

  • Fridays: 4 PM-8 PM
  • Saturdays and Sundays: 11 AM-3 PM or 4 PM-8 PM
  • On major holidays: Memorial Day, Independence Day & Labor Day

Grilling outside of these times will not be permitted.

LOCATION

Grilling will only be permitted on the upper plaza, east of the playground (toward the Annex building). Grilling anywhere else on the property is prohibited. 


GRILLING RULES

Pursuant to New York City codes and Columbia University policy

  1. 560 Riverside Management will provide charcoal grills and charcoal for grilling.  Only CU-provided charcoal grills can be used. 
  2. Only “Match Light” charcoal can be used on Columbia property. 
  3. You must provide your own matches or lighter. Charcoal starter fluid is prohibited. 
  4. Grills must be kept at least 20 feet away from any structure or combustible material.
  5. Personal charcoal grills including hibachis are NOT permitted.


UTENSILS & SUPPLIES: Residents must supply their own cooking utensils, foil, and all other supplies needed for grilling, including matches or a lighter.

ELIGIBILITY FOR USE: Must be over 21 years old to operate the barbecue grills. Resident must be with the grill at all times. Subtenants, guests, or residents from other buildings cannot reserve a grill. 

BE CONSIDERATE: Residents should be considerate of other residents by keeping noise to a minimum and controlling cooking smoke and odors as much as possible. Keep grills at least 20 feet away from the building to prevent odors and smoke from travelling into apartment windows.

CLEANING: Residents who use the grills are responsible to keep the barbecues clean for use by the next resident. Residents are responsible to keep the plaza areas clean. Residents may be charged a $100 cleaning fee if the grill or plaza is not cleaned after use.

FOOD WASTE: All food waste and refuse materials should be recycled or disposed of properly. When the Department of Sanitation resumes the organics/food waste collection program, we will update these guidelines with additional information.

 


SAFETY RULES

GLASS & BREAKABLES: ABSOLUTELY NO glass bottles, breakable drinkware/dishes/serving pieces are allowed on the plaza.

CHARCOAL DISPOSAL: Disposal pails are provided for used cool charcoal only. Charcoal must NOT be disposed of with regular trash to prevent fires. 

CHILDREN: Since the grilling area is near a playground, children must be kept away from the grills at all times.

GUESTS: Residents are responsible to supervise their guests and keep the grilling area safe.  We strongly encourage residents to keep guests to less than 15 persons.

PETS: There are no pets allowed on the play deck.

FIRE SAFETY: As a safety precaution, the building will provide a pail of water, or a charged water hose, which must be present during grill use. 

LIABILITY WAIVER: Columbia University and 560 Riverside Drive Management are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Columbia University and 560 Riverside Drive Management are not responsible for any injuries, accidents, or other incidents on the Plaza. Use of the grills and plaza area are at your own risk.

560 Riverside Drive Management and Staff may suspend grilling under any circumstances, including but not limited to:

  1. During unfavorable weather.
  2.  If noise or other complaints are received. 
  3. If the above guidelines in the agreement are not being followed. 
  4. For public health concerns.
