Entry into Occupied Apartments | Students
Columbia Residential is committed to maintaining a safe, comfortable, and well-cared-for living environment for all residents. At times, it may be necessary for University staff to enter a unit. Entry occurs only during reasonable hours and with reasonable notice, except in the case of emergencies, as authorized by the housing agreement.
Reasons for Entry
- To conduct scheduled inspections by Columbia Residential staff
- To address health, safety, or emergency concerns
- To verify compliance with the terms of the housing agreement
- To perform maintenance requested by the resident
Inspections
- Vacant rooms in student apartment shares may be inspected for building maintenance.
Viewings
- Vacant rooms in student apartment shares may be shown to prospective residents during the superintendent’s working hours, with building staff present.
The University takes special measures to provide a secure environment for all residents. In emergencies, advance notice may not be possible before entry.
- Emergency building maintenance may require immediate access.
- The Columbia University Department of Public Safety provides instruction and oversight to building personnel on all security and safety procedures.
To help ensure a safe and well-maintained community, Columbia Residential may verify compliance with the housing agreement, including standards related to floor coverings, and unit cleanliness.
