Renter’s insurance is required for all faculty and postdoc residents of Columbia Residential. This coverage protects against personal property losses such as damage, theft, or loss, and provides liability protection in case of injury or damage to another person’s property.
Renters insurance may also cover temporary living expenses if a residence becomes uninhabitable due to severe weather damage or another disaster. Some policies include off-premises coverage, which protects belongings such as phones or laptops when taken outside the residence, as outlined in the insurance policy.
Faculty and postdocs must provide proof of renter’s insurance that meet the following coverage:
- $30,000 in personal property coverage.
- $100,000 in liability coverage.
Columbia University does not offer renters insurance, but residents can find information on how to determine one’s coverage, survey one’s items, and find a provider by visiting the Insurance Information Institute
