Renters Insurance (Student)

Residents of Columbia Residential are strongly encouraged to obtain renters insurance to protect themselves financially against personal property losses. Renters insurance can provide coverage for damaged, lost, or stolen personal items, as well as personal liability if someone is injured in the apartment or if a resident is responsible for damage to another person’s property.

Renters insurance may also cover temporary living expenses if a residence becomes uninhabitable due to severe weather damage or another disaster. Some policies include off-premises coverage, which protects belongings such as phones or laptops when taken outside the residence, as outlined in the insurance policy.

Columbia University does not provide renters insurance, but residents can find information on determining coverage needs, assessing personal belongings, and selecting a provider by visiting the Insurance Information Institute.
