Public Safety
Columbia University is committed to providing a secure living environment for all residents. Many Columbia Residential buildings have superintendents who reside either on-site or nearby to assist with building operations and security.
The Columbia University Department of Public Safety oversees security and safety procedures for all building personnel and works to maintain Morningside Heights as one of the safest neighborhoods in New York City.
- Car and foot patrols are conducted throughout the Columbia Residential area.
- Guard kiosks are strategically placed to enhance security.
- Emergency call boxes are installed throughout the area for immediate assistance.
- The Morningside Area Alliance, a community service organization established by key institutions in the neighborhood, provides additional security patrols.
- Evening and night shuttle services are available for Columbia students, offering transportation to various locations in the neighborhood.
- Public Safety can walk with you around campus and the surrounding area for additional safety.
- Ensure doors close and lock behind you when entering or exiting the building. Do not hold the door open for others unless you know they are fellow residents.
- Prevent unauthorized access (“piggybacking”) by not allowing unknown individuals to follow you inside.
- Verify visitors before granting entry. If you are expecting a visitor, confirm their identity via the intercom before buzzing them in. Do not let in strangers or hold the door open for deliveries not addressed to you.
- Report suspicious activity immediately. If you observe loitering, unauthorized entry, or anything unusual, contact Public Safety at 212-854-5555.
