Leaves of Absence & Withdrawals

Columbia Residential is committed to supporting students with their housing while they are enrolled, ensuring that our housing remains available to those who need proximity to classes. We are also committed to providing clear, transparent information so that students can plan their housing with confidence and avoid unexpected challenges. Housing eligibility  is closely tied to full-time enrollment in an approved degree program, and the information below outlines how graduation, leaves of absence, or withdrawal may affect eligibility.

Students who take a leave of absence or withdraw from the University become ineligible for housing.

  • Residents must move move-out of their assigned unit within 30 days of the status change.
  • Cancellation fees may apply, and students are encouraged to review the cancellation policy for more details.

Students who take a medical leave of absence must also move-out of their assigned unit within 30 days of the status change.

Columbia Residential understands, however, that some students may have exceptional health care needs. Students with critical or acute medical conditions may request an accommodation to remain in housing beyond the standard 30-day move-out period.

  • To apply for this accommodation, students must contact the Office of Disability Services before the start of their medical leave.
  • Requests are reviewed individually by the Disability Housing Committee, and while every case is given careful consideration, approval is not guaranteed.

If approval is not granted students will be required to vacate within 30 days, according to our policy.

Students who graduate are no longer eligible for housing and must adhere to the move-out date associated with their degree conferral, regardless of the current agreement’s end date. Please note that it is the responsibility of the resident to notify Columbia Residential if they are graduating early so that proper arrangements can be made.

Columbia Residential values the well-being of every student and is committed to providing clear guidance during times of transition. By planning ahead and promptly notifying the office about graduation, leave, or withdrawal, students can ensure a smoother housing transition and feel supported throughout the process.
