Bedbug Prevention
Residents can help reduce the risk of bedbugs by taking the following precautions:
- Avoid picking up used furniture from the street, even if it appears to be in good condition.
- Do not purchase used mattresses or any other second-hand furniture.
- After traveling, immediately wash all clothing brought on the trip using the highest water temperature and highest dryer setting.
- Items that cannot be washed should be placed in a dryer on high heat for at least 20 minutes.
- Vacuum all luggage and store it in a tightly sealed plastic bag until needed.
- Vacuum regularly using a HEPA filter vacuum and change the bag frequently.
- Pay special attention to moldings, bed frames, mattresses, cracks and crevices, curtains, window frames, and furniture.
- Vacuum at least once a week, or at minimum, once a month.
- Clean frequently using soap containing essential oils (e.g., Murphy’s Oil Soap) on floors, moldings, and furniture.
- Minimize clutter to reduce potential hiding spots for bedbugs.
- Inspect and clean behind all hanging picture frames and wall décor.
If Bedbugs are Found
- Do not attempt self-treatment. Contact building staff immediately by Submitting a Service Request or contact building staff using the information in the Housing Portal to ensure professional extermination.
- Notify workplaces, schools, or other locations frequently visited if an infestation is suspected. This allows those places to take precautions and helps prevent re-infestation.
- Stay informed- learning about bedbugs in advance can help with prevention and early detection.
