Air Conditioners | Students
Most Columbia Residential units do not come equipped with air conditioners; however, residents may purchase and have one professionally installed in their unit. All air conditioners must be installed safely and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Utility information can be found within the Housing Portal and Residential Building Profiles.
Requirements and Guidelines
- Improperly installed air conditioners pose significant safety hazards and are considered violations by the New York City Department of Buildings. University buildings undergo regular inspections by building staff and engineers to identify unsafe conditions, and air conditioners are frequently found to be incorrectly installed.
- For safety reasons, all window and portable air conditioners must be professionally installed and uninstalled. Building staff are not permitted to assist with air conditioner installation. Residents who require installation services should contact a local hardware store or other qualified service provider.
Residents should adhere to the following guidelines to ensure safe and efficient air conditioner installation and usage:
- Proper Sizing: Choose an air conditioner that is appropriately sized for the space to be cooled.
- Energy Efficiency: Select an Energy Star-certified unit to reduce electricity costs and conserve energy.
- Secure Installation: The unit must be securely fastened from the inside using angles or by securing it to the interior window frame.
- Exterior Support: Any unit supported from underneath on the exterior must use properly secured metal brackets. Loose objects such as wood blocks or bricks are prohibited, as they pose safety risks.
- Drainage Considerations: The unit should be slightly tilted to allow proper water drainage and prevent leaks into the apartment or adjacent units.
- Fire Safety Compliance: Air conditioners must not obstruct fire escapes or emergency exits. Window air conditioners cannot be installed in windows facing a fire escape. Portable air conditioners may be used in such windows, but residents should consult their superintendent to ensure compliance before installation.
- Filter Maintenance: Air conditioner filters should be replaced at least once every two months during the cooling season to maintain efficiency and prevent increased electricity consumption.
- Move-Out: Upon vacating the unit, residents must uninstall and remove their air conditioners. Any unit left behind will result in a removal charge.
